As I’ve mentioned here a few times before…How Martha Saved her Parents from Green Beans pops into bookstores in April. Written by David LaRochelle and illustrated by me, it’s no doubt the greatest children’s picture book ever created. Ever. In all of history. And I mean that on a galactic scale. OK…So I’m filled with hyperbole. Give me a job in marketing then.
Anyway, Here’s a quick example of a before and after.
This is the rough sketch. This is the BEFORE stage. Notice how my rough outlines are so rough, I can’t even follow them…What is wrong with me?
And below is AFTER I run the ‘Illustrate This Page’ Photoshop plug-in. Amazing isn’t it? The bad part is the Illustrate This Page plug-in actually takes about 4 days to work and I have to be there the entire time.

Nice work, as always. It would be fun to see in between steps on a painting if you save the drafts? Or maybe the layers of one finished piece. I’d like to know more about your backgrounds – I mean, when you have time. Erm. Never mind! Congrats on the upcoming book. It is the best. Ever. And I haven’t seen it yet.
Secrets! They are all secrets! My usual method is to do really rough, roughs, the art directors call and ask me to explain what I am doing. I try and make it more clear, and during this I usually do the finished art. Then I make changes. Actually I am preparing a new website that will be thick in some demos and samples and sketches of work in progress. I’ve decided to build that all out on the website vs. the blog. Step by step…
“And below is AFTER I run the ‘Illustrate This Page’ Photoshop plug-in.”
You joke now but I’ve heard that’s coming in Creative Suite 7.
And then we’re all out of jobs.
I wouldn’t be surprised. Plus a lot of people I talk to think there us such a thing anyway.
