Think like a kid

I always wondered, where do giants get their clothes? In fairy tales giants are always dressed pretty well and usually there was only one giant. So, could he sew? Did he have mail order? I started to write a story about a giant (Wilbur) who loses his pants (I can’t tell you how, that’s part of the story!) and has to get the townsfolk to make him new ones. It takes quite a bit of effort to make a giant pair of pants, or a giant’s pair of pants. A few adults I have shown the sketches and who read the manuscript; they were aghast at the idea of a pantsless giant. I mean, he is wearing underwear people! Geez… But it made me think about the difference between how kids think and adults think. I’m not sure if it is a good thing that I often don’t think like an adult. I just always wondered, where do those giant clothes come from, and whats funnier then the word ‘pantsless’? Heck, is it even a word? Anyway, this story gets put on the back burner for the time being.
Here’s the cover sketch I did. On a side note, I love to use Sanford col-erase blue pencils to sketch with. Something I picked up on in animation school at UCLA. The line is rich, easy to erase and vary the thickness, also great to build simple shadows up with. Next to Col-erase I like Ebony, jet black extra smooth pencils to sketch with. Again, I draw better when I use them. Weird. OK. Now I have really gone off the blog deep end with a topic about pencils…

Mark–If you haven’t sent this out yet, I’d love to see it. I love the weird, wackiness of it.–Abigail (at Tricycle Press)
speaking of book characters running around without clothes, here’s a title by adam rex and amy timberlake. it’s called the “dirty cowboy”. very amusing and creative in how rex disguises the cowboy’s “nekkedness”. here’s a link to the book on amazon.com:

Howdy Rita!
Quite a while since we talked. I caught up a bit on your livejournal page. Some good book reviews. And quite a trip. Wow. I’m envious. Hope all is well. When I start posting short stories here don;t be too rough with your critique.
